[CNN] News Associate Program
Join the East Coast team at the heart of newsgathering and production for content across the entire network working in the bustling energetic New York City based CNN Newsroom. This 15-month editorial training program will feature up to 3 hands-on rotational positions where early career journalists will gain exposure and develop their journalistic skills. News Associates become true members of the newsroom team - a core function of the newsgathering and reporting operation assisting in producing editorial content and supporting Digital and Television functions across all platforms.
This early career program will also provide access to networking and coaching with the best and brightest throughout the year. Gain exposure to various operations - including multiple beats, shows, and units - within the CNN apparatus by being in the heart of the action and working with a National News Hub that services all platforms.
This is a unique experience that will jump start your career in journalism. This program is paid, with eligibility for some benefits.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Pitch and write unique stories for various CNN platforms across myriad of topics.
Cover legal proceedings in person or remotely including at times high profile and political cases.
Chase breaking news, support editorial newsgathering and reporting on key stories on deadline, including writing content for digital publication and cross platform use.
Monitor, log and report back newsworthy sound bites from press conferences on pertinent topics with key officials.
Support Reporters and Producers in video package production by searching for video in our systems, logging, and identifying key soundbites.
Monitor competitive networks, sources including social media to maintain pulse of regional news and to build competitive Pitch notes daily.
Engage with CNN Business reporting team to support editorial newsgathering and production on topics including Economy, The Cost of Living, Technology, Consumer Brands, AI & more.
Work closely with writers for CNN Business in various verticals and with Business reporters on package production and live hits.
Set up and manage recording of events from key leaders including the United Nations daily schedule, communicate and collaborate with live desk coordinators and recording teams.
Occasionally assist Reporters and Producers in the field on major stories or conduct on the ground man-on-the-street interviews.
Greet guests including high profile television personalities, experts, and professionals, liaise with Security, and guide on-air-guests through the building including securing Hair and Makeup services and ensuring they are microphoned and ready to go for live air; Occasional prompting and printing scripts for anchors.
Communicate with various show producers and executive producers to ensure guests are situated for hit times across all live television production.
Occasional opportunity to shadow control room.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong general news judgment and editorial skills.
Strong writing skills; Please include writing repertoire in application.
Should have the ability to multi-task, be resourceful, and make fast informed decisions.
A bachelor's degree in journalism or related field of study is preferred, or equivalent experience.
At least one job or internship in a news environment, which could include an online or school publication, or previous newsroom experience is preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
