[US OLYMPICS] Sr. Associate General Counsel
The Senior Associate General Counsel, Marketing and Intellectual Property (Sr. AGC) serves as a legal and business affairs advisor to the USOPC Strategy & Growth Division, providing strategic advice and input into the creation and execution of USOPC partnerships and programs that promote the Olympic & Paralympic brand in the United States. The Sr. AGC will provide expert level support and strategic partnership for key USOPC relationships, including those with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs), Games Rights Holding Broadcaster (RHB), and the Los Angeles 2028 Marketing Joint Venture (USOPP).
The role will report to the Deputy General Counsel, take the lead in interfacing between the Legal Department and the Strategy & Growth Division and supervise a Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property and Paralegal, Intellectual Property.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the primary legal liaison to USOPP on domestic commercial partnerships, associated sponsor activations, and other marketing matters. This includes drafting, reviewing, and supporting negotiations with the IOC on USOPC commercial partnerships at the international level as well as merchandise licensing.
Serve as a key advisor to the Strategy & Growth team by providing key advice and expertise on the USOPC’s content licensing approach including refreshes and upgrades to the program as well as managing relationships with donors, and production companies, and to third parties, as applicable.
Provide key strategic advice to USOPC leadership on matters relating to USOPC media, which includes but is not limited to, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts regarding Olympic Games media agreements for the United States and U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Paralympic Games and Pan American Games media in the United States. Work in business affairs capacity in joint efforts with the IOC and third party media partners to support all Olympic and Paralympic media efforts in the United States.
Be a strategic partner to the USOPC Strategy & Growth Division in negotiating other complex commercial agreements with IOC, IPC, USOPP, and other OCOGs that are fundamental to the USOPC long term revenue streams as well as stewardship of the Olympic and Paralympic Brand in the United States.
Serve as the lead legal advisor on data use and governance matters (to include data privacy) involving the USOPC, IOC, IPC, OCOGs, NGBs, and other third parties to ensure compliance with applicable data privacy laws and regulations.
Partner with the Strategy & Growth Division in efforts to assist USOPC in proactively promoting and strengthening the Olympic & Paralympic brand, including through USOPC marketing properties (e.g., U.S. Olympic Team Trials, 100 Days Out, Road to, Team USA Awards, etc.), creation and implementation of NGB brand extension policies, and USOPC social media (including participation in cross-divisional efforts to create and implement standardized data collection policies and procedures).
Supervise the Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property and Paralegal, Intellectual Property and provide subject matter expertise in Intellectual Property. Create an atmosphere for outstanding teamwork through clear expectations, frequent communication, and providing fair and consistent feedback.
Serve as a key leader on the USOPC legal team by mentoring others and supervising work of legal team relating to the Sr. AGC’s practice area, including but not limited to:
Training site relationships and agreements,
Digital marketing and other commercial relationships with NGBs, data/privacy work, and athlete marketing-related guidelines, protections and releases (to include the provision of training and education to athletes, agents, and commercial partners relating to IOC and IPC Games-time policies such as Rules 40 and 50, anti-ambush, and IOC and IPC Social Media Guidelines).
Communicate and collaborate with, and support the Deputy General Counsel on other legal matters as assigned; coordinate across USOPC Legal personnel to ensure that efficient and effective cross-divisional legal decisions are implemented.
REQUIREMENTS
Juris Doctor degree
Admitted to practice law in the State of Colorado or the ability to obtain membership in a reasonable amount of time and/or
15+ years of experience in sponsorship/marketing contracts and licensing, with experience in media/digital media law and data/privacy preferred
Proven experience in dealing with issues arising in connection with unique and challenging interplay of rights holder interests
Proven record of accomplishment that demonstrates initiative, creativity, managerial, and interpersonal skills
Prior experience representing amateur or professional sports organizations or sponsors of sports events or organizations beneficial
Superior written and verbal communication skills
Superior interpersonal skills
Excellent ability to assess legal issues objectively, effectively summarize and translate issues for business personnel
Role is remote.
Hiring pay range $174,602 - $221,744 per year
