[STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY] Assistant Professor, Film
Lichtenstein Center/Department of Creative Writing, Film & Television at Stony Brook University seeks to hire an innovative tenure-track Assistant Professor of Film, with specializations in screenwriting, directing, or producing/physical production. Candidates must be passionate about independent filmmaking. They should have a strong record of one or two of the following: screenwriting and TV writing, directing, or producing; at least one produced feature film or optioned screenplay or pilot. They should hold an M.F.A. in Film or Video or the equivalent, such as a B.A. with an exceptionally strong record of produced films or pilots, or a PhD with produced films or pilots. They should have evidence of successful teaching. Candidates will be expected to maintain an active professional practice, engage with the industry, and stay current with the world of independent film and television production.
This position carries a 2/2 teaching load as well as graduate and undergraduate thesis direction on two of three campuses, located within two hours’ commute of each other (Manhattan & Stony Brook). Film is an independent, entrepreneurial, innovative, team-based core program within a department that also offers an M.F.A.and B.F.A. in Creative Writing. Our educational partner is Killer Films, the independent film production company. QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have one produced feature film and/or pilot, evidence of successful teaching, and an M.F.A. (foreign equivalent or higher) in Film or Video or the equivalent, such as a B.A. (foreign equivalent or higher) with an exceptionally strong record of produced films or pilots, or a PhD (or foreign equivalent) with produced films or pilots.
Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom. Interest and/or experience in teaching culturally diverse curricula. Interest in microbudget and independent filmmaking. Experience with digital and post production, including familiarity with some of the following equipment: Red Epic, Canon C-line, and Adobe Premiere also a plus. As is field sound recording, sound mixing and design and color.
If Screenwriter, knowledge of TV Writing forms
If Director, experience with teaching physical production
If Producer, ability to teach physical production
